Title:  Cathedral of the Nativity of BVM Pig Roast Facility Fundraisers

Council: Archbishop Seghers 1760

Category: Council

Date: 10/15/2016

Purpose of activity: Archbishop Seghers Council 1760 hosted the 2nd annual pig roast and dessert auction fund-raiser for the Cathedral of the Nativity Building Fund.

Description:   Archbishop Seghers Council 1760 held the first pig roast in 2015 and Fr. Pat Casey OMI thought it was so good we should make it a tradition. Brother Knight Carl and Marie Uchytil have a pig roaster. Carl & Marie donate and roast the pig. Tickets were sold at the door. Members were asked to bring side dishes and if possible desserts to auction. We also had two surprise boxes of stuff for auction. We had good attendance, excellent roast pig and side dishes and many beautiful desserts. Janet and Joe O'Malley coordinated the desserts etc. and also made centerpieces for auction. Cost to the Council was $133. Total proceeds was $2873 - we rounded it up to $3000 which we gave to the Cathedral Building Fund.
Note that 29% participation is based on total membership of 86 but only about 60 are in Juneau. The estimates of participation are based on those members who brought side dishes and or desserts and time it would have taken to prepare such.

Title:   Council 4859 Recruitment Efforts During 2016-2017 Fraternal Year

Council: Our Lady of the Snows Council 4859

Category: Council

Date: 7/01/2016

Purpose of activity: Council 4859 recruitment efforts during fraternal year 2016-2017.

Description:

Since the beginning of this Fraternal Year (2016-2017), C4859 has been actively recruiting members into our council through its Sunday Breakfast Program…held the 3rd Sunday of each month at Holy Family Cathedral, Anchorage.

Using a display booth (see attached picture) that was built by Past Grand Knight Abner Picon (who passed away last year in 2016), our council has endeavored to use our Sunday Breakfast events (held the 3rd Sunday of each month) to promote recruitment of new candidates for our council. Our Sunday breakfast events are very well attended by our parishioners at Holy Family Cathedral.

In October, 2016…our pastor, Fr. Steven Maekawa, O.P., asked if we could reschedule our Sunday Breakfast to Sunday, October 30th (the 5th Sunday of October) in conjunction with the Holy Family Cathedral Ministry Fair. For Fr. Maekawa, the intent was to use the Sunday Breakfast to encourage parishioners to come and volunteer for various ministries at Holy Family Cathedral.

Knowing that this would also be a good opportunity to recruit new candidates for our council, it was decided by our council Knights to provide the Sunday Breakfast for free on October 30th.

The Ministry Fair was subsequently promoted by Fr. Maekawa to our parishioners through the month of October with a free breakfast provided by our council.

Results were that we recruited 7 candidates as a result of the Ministry Fair. Additionally, Fr. Maekawa was able to get 60 of our parishioners to volunteer for 27 different ministries at Holy Family Cathedral. By the way, Fr. Maekawa become one of our candidates and has since become a Knight in our Council 4859.

Our council also worked with Fr. Maekawa on a project in sponsoring Thursday Night NFL football over a 5 week period at Holy Family Cathedral. Our council provided the food each Thursday evening.

Our Council 4859 also provided the funding ( $988 ) for Holy Family Cathedral’s Thanksgiving Dinner (on Thanksgiving Day 2016) ….. as well as preparing the Thanksgiving Dinner of 12 turkeys with all the trimmings for approximately 240 parishioners who attended the event.

See attached Letter of Thanks from Fr. Steven Maekawa, O.P.

At the time of this report (March 13th  2017) , C4859 has added 7 First Degree Knights to our council with one candidate presently being scheduled for his First Degree Exemplification.

With these measures, we are endeavoring to make Star Council with our council’s quota set at 10 Knights for Fraternal Year 2016-17.

Title:   Special Olympics Polar Plunge

Council: St. Benedict 12290

Category: Council

Date: 12/17/2016

Purpose of activity: To raise money for Special Olympics.

Description: Council 12290 has been working hand in hand with the Special Olympics of Alaska in volunteering to help at their events. The largest fundraiser in which they have is their Polar Plunge. Where people have their families and loved ones sponsor them so that they can jump into Goose Lake in Anchorage, AK in the middle of winter. Each jumper must raise at least $125 to be able to make the plunge. There are two ways in which we helped with this ~vent. First, we got a team together to make the plunge. We named the team Mary and her Knights, there were 5 members of our council and 5 family members. Our team had 2 months to raise the most money we could raise and ended up exceeding our goal to raise over $6,000. We also had many other members of the council spending time in the hospitality tent providing hot beverages and soup for the jumpers and spectators. Our team made the plunge on the cold morning of December 17, 2016 to "freeze for a reason".
