Title: Cathedral of the Nativity of BVM Altar Server Thank You Party

Council: Archbishop Seghers 1760

Category: Youth

Date: 01/07/2017

Purpose of activity: Archbishop Seghers Council 1760 thanks the youth and teen altar servers at the Cathedral of the Nativity of BVM for their service with a pizza and bowling party.

Description: The Cathedral of the Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary has about 18 youth and teen altar servers. For the past several years we have been thanking them with a pizza and bowling party at Taku Lanes. Patrick Minick, our Youth Director, has organized this event. Patrick works with our Pastoral Associate Sister Marie Lucek OP to make sure all servers are notified and invited. When the party happens we typically have about 50% attendance. Everyone has a lot of fun and the event is very well received. The cost is about $170. In the future we may add a Gross Alaska movie gift card so that all servers will receive a thank-you gift, even if they miss the party.

The council purchased 33 hard-bound Cathechism of the Catholic Church for Monroe Catholic High School which are used in the Religious Education classes. These brothers would ensure no items left the auction without proper paperwork, check parking lot to ensure vehicles were secure and ensuring those that needed a ride after the event had the appropriate ride or a taxi to ensure their safety. The Brother Knights had a combined total of 70 man-hours for this event.

Knights deep-cleaned the school kitchen in order to the support the use by the Monroe High School Booster Club and other school sponsored dinners and various other events. The cleaning process consist of: washing the walls and ceilings, cleaning the hood vents, grill tops, popcorn machine and all other surfaces. Brother Knights had a combined total of 32 man-hours.

Category: Youth

Date: 08/13/2016

Purpose of activity: The Council 9830 Coats for Kids effort is a Knights of Columbus Supreme eff01t that provides coats to children and/or families in need. Prior to our 2016 drive, our Council had provided this support but were not reaching all the children in need of coats due to our program support happening after winter had started here in Alaska. Brother Tony Bromirsk.i asked if he could take over the program and see if we could improve our coat distribution. After review, Brother Tony realized that if we moved our program up to August instead of November, we might see improvement.

Description: The Council 9830 Coats for Kids effort is a Knights of Columbus Supreme effort that provides coats to children and/or families in need. Prior to our 2016 drive, our Council had provided this support but were not reaching all the children in need of coats due to our program support happening after winter had started here in Alaska. Brother Tony Bromirski asked if he could take over the program and see if we could improve om coat distribution. After review, Brother Tony realized that if we moved our program up to August instead of November, we might see improvement.

Brother Tony partnered with another local charity effort, "Love Inc", who support preparing school age children for the upcoming school year by having the "Backpack" back to school effort.

On August 13, 2016 our Council Knights arrived at 7:00am to prepare to hand out the coats. Our Council sized and handed out 125 winter coats and 2 pairs of snow pants. We also had 20 new coats donated to our council through Harvest Christian Fellowship Church. In addition to these J 45 coats, we also had about 35 coats left over from our 2015 drive and also distributed those.

By evaluating our process and thinking outside the box, Brother Tony was able to lead this effort to new levels
and distributed 100% of our coats, plus our leftover coats from 2015.
